Since the devastating results of the 2016 election, many in Newton and across Massachusetts have struggled with how we can help "take back" our country, given that our own state's congressional delegation is entirely Democratic. Many new groups have formed with this in mind, and local Democratic Committees are brainstorming.
In this context, The Newton Democratic City Committee is launching a project whose eventual goal is to flip the 2nd Congressional District in Maine from red to blue in 2018, as it is the only Republican House seat in New England. Additionally, recognizing the important role that the state legislatures are playing (voter redistricting and gerrymandering), we would also like to help Maine elect a Democratic-led state legislature.
The Newton City Democratic Committee is working with the Maine Democratic Party and has agreed to help them in the 2 ways they have suggested. One is to phone bank Maine Democrats to recruit volunteers. This is important, as the Maine Party recognizes that when it comes to canvassing for Democratic candidates for Congress and their State Legislature it will be most effective if those volunteers are from Maine. But we, as out-of-state volunteers, can help them to recruit their volunteers from phone banks in Newton. Additionally, we can raise funds so that they can hire field organizers in Maine.
Given those 2 priorities which our partners in Maine have identified, we are writing to invite you to:
1. SAVE THE DATE for a fundraiser for the Maine Democratic Party at the home of Shawn Fitzgibbons at 300 Homer Street in Newton Centre on Tuesday June 27 at 7pm. We will be joined by Special Guest our former Congressman Barney Frank, who now resides in both Newton and Maine! Joining Barney will be a leader of the Maine Democratic Party who will fill us in on their strategic planning.
2. Phone Banks will be held at the home of Jason Paul, at 1548 Beacon Street, on Monday May 15th and Monday May 22nd, from 5pm to 8pm.
To discuss this project further, feel free to contact any of the 3 of us (emails below.)
Please forward this email to anyone or groups who you think will be interested!!!
